What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, or reductive mammoplasty, is the operation to reduce the size of the breasts. This is a surgical procedure in which the fat, glandular tissue and skin of the breast are treated, reducing its size and weight, leaving it firmer. Furthermore, the size of the areola can be reduced if it is enlarged as a consequence of breastfeeding or simply because it is considered large.

Many young women can have severe self-esteem problems because of the size of their breasts. A large number of young girls suffer terrible complexes from this problem and end up reducing their social activity, they do not wear bathing suits or manage to have normal relationships for their age due to their self-esteem.

In most cases, surgery is not performed until the breasts are fully developed, that is, from 16 to 17 years old.

Women with large breasts may experience medical problems from the weight of their breasts, such as neck pain, skin irritation, back pain, deformities of the spine, and respiratory problems. The bras typically leave marks and sometimes shoulder wounds.

Breast Reduction Details

Technique

Incisions are made around the areola and on the skin of the breast. The glandular tissue is reduced in size and similarly in both breasts. The areola and nipple are repositioned higher so that they lose their flaccidity and the skin is sutured, eliminating the excess. The person does not lose sensitivity in the breasts and does not affect breastfeeding capacity in the main, although it must be recognized that some women will not be able to breastfeed their children for other reasons, independent of surgery.

The scar can be in the form of an anchor or in "L" shape towards the armpit, leaving the neckline free of scar. Dr. Joaquín García Aparicio is a pioneer in Spain in performing this technique.

In the event that the L-shaped surgery cannot be performed, the traditional inverted "T" -shaped surgery will be used, which will also allow for a beautiful neckline.

Duration and Anesthesia

The duration of the breast reduction is between 2 and 3 hours, under general anesthesia, and may be admitted to the hospital.

Postoperative

At the end of the operation, it is also placed on an anatomical bra that will be kept for a month and a compression bandage, which is removed after 48 hours, which ensures the correct position of the implants and the protection of the wound. will be replaced by a bra. You will be able to return to work in a week or two, although you will be able to lead a normal life within a few days.

Most discomfort is well controlled with the prescribed medication. At approximately 20 days the intradermal suture will be removed. You can shower normally after 4 days, although baths are not recommended until the stitches are removed.

After breast reduction surgery it is normal to be a little tired for a few days, but you will be able to live a normal life. Most discomfort is well controlled with the prescribed medication, although it may hurt for a couple of weeks or with the first menstruation.

It is recommended not to carry out abrupt exercises or gain weight during the first days.

The treatments that require surgery of this type, although the way to heal is unique for each patient, will be treated specifically, with great care, so that the healing is optimal and is noted as little as possible.
